Atmospheric Black Metal

Apathia

Sometimes a band’s name can give you a pretty clear insight into the kind of music they produce. So it is with Oak Pantheon, the Minnesota-based duo currently carrying the torch unwittingly handed to them by fellow atmospheric metal purveyors Agalloch. From the opening groove metal-inspired riffs of Dawn as a New Day, Oak Pantheon lay down an epic cycle of grand and powerful atmospheric black metal, replete with ample dosages of extended riffing sections, acoustic guitar passages, tremolo picking over blastbeats, and post-rock-influenced builds and swells. Several of the cuts here breach the ten-minute mark, and the vocals switch between effective clean passages and the more traditional black metal shriek. Like a trek through the wintery mountains of Norway, this adventure is not for the faint of heart, but the rewards for those who put in the time and effort are rich
