Rival Consoles - Night Melody
2016
Microhouse / Progressive Electronic
Erased Tapes
Night Melody is an unassuming little electronic record. Following a breakup, Ryan Lee West crafted six dense IDM numbers that incorporate everything from shuffling digital percussion to detuned synth atmospherics, similar to the microhouse style popularized by the likes of Jon Hopkins. The melodies and grooves on display here are subtle and casual — blink or drift away from the speakers and you may find that the album has passed you by. But a closer inspection reveals all sorts of hidden embellishments, interesting transitions, and background textures, all of which reward close and repeat listening. Recommended for night driving or late night studying.
